But I didn’t watch it for the hair extensions or the “MomTok” drama. I watched it because, as an Ex-Mormon, I recognize the architecture of the high-control group they are operating in. As a survivor of child psychological abuse and false allegations, I recognize the smell of a smear campaign. And as a Forensic Criminologist, I couldn’t help but treat the screen like a crime scene.

Most people see a messy storyline. I see a textbook case of reputational homicide.

The federal lawsuit filed by Marciano Brunette against Demi Engemann isn’t just celebrity gossip. It is a masterclass in how allegations are fabricated, escalated, and commercialized.

Here is the forensic breakdown of what happens when “purity culture” meets a PR crisis.

1. The Cultural Motive: Purity as Currency

To understand the crime, you have to understand the environment. In the high-control culture of Mormonism, a woman’s social value is intrinsically tied to her perception of purity and marital loyalty.

When cameras, which are everywhere in reality TV, catch a married Mormon woman flirting, crossing boundaries, or engaging in what looks like infidelity, she faces a catastrophic loss of status. She is cornered.

In these high-control dynamics, when a member is caught violating the rules, they often employ a tactic we call DARVO: Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. The allegation becomes a shield used to deflect shame. It’s not about justice; it’s about reputation management.

The Retaliation: It was only after Demi was exposed as the architect of that falsehood that her narrative shifted. Suddenly, the “accomplice” she used to attack Jesse became the “predator” who assaulted her.

Forensically, this destroys credibility. You cannot spend months using a man as your personal hitman to destroy a friend’s marriage, and then, the moment he exposes you, claim you were terrified of him the whole time.

Marciano isn’t innocent, he participated in the destruction of Jesse’s reputation, but Demi’s pattern is clear: She uses False Allegations as a primary weapon of warfare.

The core of my analysis involved overlaying individual letters and words from each sample to create a direct, visual comparison of their shapes, slants, and unique characteristics. To my knowledge, this specific digital overlay methodology has not been done before with these documents and provides a uniquely clear visual for analysis.

The Findings: Stacking the Traits

In forensic examination, the word 'similarity' can be misleading to the public. The analysis is not focused on the similarities in the way we were all taught to write in grammar school—those are known as 'class characteristics.' Instead, the process focuses on identifying and stacking unique, individual characteristics—the specific, repeated quirks and habits of letter formation, spacing, and connection that are dissimilar to the general population. It is the consistency of these anomalies across both the Questioned and Known documents that builds a compelling case, here are a few examples below:

Exhibit A: The Letter 'a'

A distinctive characteristic is the formation of the lowercase 'a'. Both the Q and K samples show 'a's with a flattened area at the top instead of a traditional curve. Furthermore, both samples exhibit an anomalous trait where the stem of the 'a' leans inward toward the left, a shared feature that also displays an irregular top portion.

Exhibit B: The Letter 'd'

The formation of the letter 'd' revealed another unique shared trait: e.g. in the last window below, a triangular shape in the loop. This specific and unusual characteristic appeared in both the questioned and known documents.

Comparing a full word allows for the stacking of multiple traits at once. The word ‘will’ in both exemplars is unmistakably similar in shape, slant, and width. Both begin with a "blob" at the entry point of the ‘w’. Critically, the double ‘l’s show a shared idiosyncrasy: the left ‘l’ is straighter, while the right ‘l’ is slightly curved, with a small wobble near the bottom of the stem in both samples.

Conclusion: A Compelling Case for Further Inquiry

After a detailed analysis, my professional opinion is that it is entirely plausible that Mr. Oliva penned the ransom note. While I cannot assert this with absolute certainty, my analysis revealed a compelling number of shared unique characteristics and idiosyncratic patterns that provide a strong basis for deeper consideration.

It is critical to note that this focus on the note's authorship is distinct from the question of the homicide itself. My opinion is confined to the forensic evidence of the handwriting, which I believe is compelling enough to warrant further examination.

This opinion was strengthened through a peer-review process. My full, formal report was corroborated by my investigative team, which included investigator Jason Jensen, my colleague Dr. Mozelle Martin, and a former CIA agent with expertise in this area. When questions of credibility arise in the world of forensics, they often revolve around a very narrow, traditional path. My path has been different—not by accident, but by design. It is a path of independent study, specialized mentorship, and a clear, ethical focus.

My Training & Mentors

My journey into this field has been a path of continuous, multi-faceted training designed to build a specific, modern skill set. It began with a deep, personal fascination with pattern recognition and was formalized through years of self-directed study and, most importantly, through direct, ongoing mentorship and education with respected experts.

I am proud to have trained under Katherine Koppenhaver, a highly esteemed Forensic Document Examiner. Our work together included a comprehensive 16-hour workshop in Maryland, which was followed by ongoing weekly classes and mentorship. Her foundational book on the subject remains a key textbook that I refer to in my case work today.

My Methodology

My methodology prioritizes depth over breadth. It focuses on identifying a consistent pattern of unique, idiosyncratic traits—those specific habits that are dissimilar to standard grammar school teachings—not a single outlier in a sea of noise.

A clear example of this can be seen in my analysis of the JonBenet Ramsey ransom note, where I was commissioned to provide an expert opinion on the handwriting of suspect Gary Oliva. My approach was to use a single, strong exemplar document—one that was a known, reliable sample of Oliva's writing in the same style as the ransom note—and identify dozens of significant pattern similarities within it.

This stands in contrast to a flawed methodology of scouring hundreds of pages, where diluting the sample pool makes it statistically likely to find a coincidental similarity, which can lead to confirmation bias and an unsound conclusion.

My Mission

This leads directly to my mission, and why I have structured my practice in this specific way. I have witnessed the "cut-throat" nature of adversarial courtroom battles, where the goal can sometimes shift from finding the truth to discrediting the opposition. I made a conscious, ethical decision to step away from that arena.

My mission is not to be a "hired gun" in legal disputes. My mission is to bring new light to cold cases, to offer new perspectives to investigative teams, and to give a voice to victims whose stories have gone unheard. I am here to help find the truth, not to win a fight.
